Does Tetracycline make your teeth yellow?

asked by Mochi210 on 5 August 2007 6:18

I'm taking tetracycline for more than a year. It's kind of controling my acne, but I would still get bad break outs. I notice my teeth is getting yellow. Is this normal?

Hi Mochi210. You should really ask your dermatologist for more information. Just to make sure yellow teeth is not one of the side effects. Maybe ask for another kind of antibiotic instead? There are other types of antibiotic that treat acne as well and they are Minocycline, Erythromycin, Doxycycline.

Use of tetracycline, especially minocycline, can stain the teeth but it usually causes a bluish-gray stain, not a yellow stain. If you want to know for sure whether your stained teeth is because of tetracycline, view your teeth under UV light. If it fluoresces, it's due to the tetracycline use. If it doesn't, it's not.

Tetracycline stains are very difficult to bleach. Prolonged bleaching is necessary to see any result.

Thanks guys. I'll ask my dermatologist the next time I see him. Maybe I should make an appointment with my dentist too. Maybe I can ask my mom for teeth bleaching since school is starting soon. =P

Do you drink coffee, wine, or color beverage? Maybe that is what caused your teeth yellow and not Tetracycline. My dermatologist prescribed Tetracycline antibiotic for my acne last year and my teeth didn’t turn yellow.
