How do I trust again?
asked by Ophelia on 12 January 2008 19:20
I've been hurt so much in my life that I'm afraid to let anyone get close. I'm just so tired of the heartache. I know it's not healthy to isolate myself, but I don't know how to open up to others and I'm terrified of the idea of taking that chance again. Any advice?

For me this is a difficult question to answer as I often find myself in the same position--asking myself the same exact same thing. I don't have an answer for you so much as an encouragement that you are not alone in feeling this way.
Well, if you ask me, there really is no technique or right way to opening up to others. You just do, in your own unique way, when you feel the time is right and when you're with someone you feel at ease with. The key here is to remember that not everyone is a heartless, selfish jerk. There are a lot of good people out there in the world, so chances are, you'll find people who will genuinely care about you, I'm sure of it.
Well probably as the rest of us on this site, this is a very difficult thing to do. Especially if you have experienced trauma. But the key is always to feel safe and healthy. At some points in life it may be both safe and healthy to not trust people and learn how to gain trust and confidence in yourself. That way if some one does lie to you or break your trust it wont crush you as a person. If you need to talk email me at theinsaneprofessor@yahoo.com
