Many people don't realize that HIV/AIDS is still an issue in America today. There are thousands of new cases reported every year, however, and this is one disease that is completely preventable. I work at an org in the state of Virginia and the state itself does little to allocate money for prevention services.
Why is this so critical? Virginia has a steadily rising rate of HIV in nearly every corner of the commonwealth. Many of the new cases are being diagnosed in the population centers of the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington DC and the Eastern Virginia/Tidewater region. The Washington suburbs have an especially alarming increasing rate of HIV/AIDS, due to many factors, including the fact that Washington DC ranks #1 in new infections.
These trends must stop. And they can. Support your local HIV/AIDS prevention programs now!
