What does it mean to live in silence?

I often wonder. Is it my imagination that comes up with the tiny ringing in my ears? It's only in total silence that I hear it. It's distant… so I often have to wonder whether it's external.. or internal. It makes me feel… uncomfortable… and anxious. It's so… annoying that I can't sleep without the fan on because it makes a more welcoming sound… and at least I know it's not all in my head. Either the fan… or the radio are more calming than that ringing.
